The Life
and Work of Artist Jack Vettriano
It began
with a gift from the woman he loved, inspiring a young man to paint like
there was no tomorrow. For an artist, Jack Vettriano started late. No-one
could have guessed that in 1972, a 21 year old geological engineer would
go on to become an artist who would invariably capture an era that had
already been forgotten by a post war world.
Armed simply with a canvas and brush, Jack Vettriano began a journey that
would continue until he was confident enough to promote his art to the
world.Incredibly,
his original and, perhaps, somewhat disturbing style, would be an instant
hit in the English and Scottish art community. This was, however, an apprenticeship
that took him nearly fourteen years to complete.
Jack Vettrianos’ style is that of a gritty, life-like realism. Using extreme
contrasts of shadow and light, Jack produces a realistic interaction of
characters having their daily discussions, walking to work – the life
of the city. Vettrianos’ art is that of the street combined with the desiring
of a golden age (the 1940’s) where people still actually believed in something.
During
the 1989 annual exhibit at the Royal Scottish Academy, Jack Vettriano
sold two of his paintings on the first day. From this point onward, the
paintings of Jack Vettriano would become much loved and noted. Art dealers
jump with six figure cash cheques when the name Vettriano is mentioned.
The paintings of Jack Vettrianos’ exhibitions are quickly scooped up by
eager buyers in over 3 different continents, most notably Asia and Europe.
